The postwar years were good for Cadillac. They sold about 30,000 updated 1942 models each year and competed with Packard for the top spot as America’s luxury car leader. The battle was short-lived as Cadillac introduced, on selected 1948 models, the famous aircraft inspired tailfin design that was inspired by the Lockheed P-38 fighter plane. From that point on Cadillac became the style innovator in the high price field. Tailfins and big powerful engines would characterize Cadillac through the early 1960’s but annual restyling would make them appear new and ever more exciting. The Cadillac Series 61 Club Coupe for 1949 was a unique design with it up-swept tail fins and massive grill treatment with grooved extension panels housing the front parking lights. The distinguishing factor for 1949 was the new overhead valve V8. This was the first year for the new engine which had a cast iron block and a displacement of 331 cubic inches that produced 160 horsepower. It utilized five main bearings, hydraulic valve lifters and a Carter WCD two barrel carburetor. It was an engine that would serve Cadillac for over 30 years without growing stale. It would, of course become larger and more powerful over time. With its tail fins, the ultimate Detroit new styling tool, and high compression overhead valve engine it positioned Cadillac as the dominate player in the luxury car market. The Series 61 Coupe is also equipped with a Hydra-Matic transmission which was a $174 option. The one-millionth Cadillac ever produced rolled off production line on November 25, 1949. The limited production of only 7,515 Club Coupes make these an interesting and collectible part of Cadillac history. The Milestone Car Society recognizes the 1949 Cadillac coupe as a Milestone Car. The design for 1949 makes these Cadillac very collectible as the following year dramatic styling changes took place giving the 1950 Cadillac’s a much heavier look. This 1949 Cadillac Series 61 Club Coupe has been well maintained. The green paint carries a pleasant patina of age. The interior shows a little wear, but is in good order and the engine bay is clean and tidy. I have the trim piece for the drivers front fender and the park light lens for the passenger front. I drove it for several days when I took possession of it about 3 or 4 years ago and it has been in my warehouse since. The gas is probably stale, so I'm sure you will want to flush it. This will be a welcome addition at any Cadillac-LaSalle Club event. This classic beauty yearns to be driven and enjoyed. This is a private sale and no sales tax applies. The cadillac is being sold as is / no warranties apply. I would entertain TRADES for anything that sparks my interest but priced reasonably.
